chronic care & mental health

Following the fires that destroyed Moria camp in September 2020, the camp’s residents were relocated to the emergency camp of Mavrovouni on Lesvos. Among the population, patients requiring continued treatment for chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and mental health conditions.

From October 2020 until the summer of 2023, CMA ran a Chronic Care Clinic within the medical area of the camp to address this need. CMA supported the development of a sustainable healthcare system while creating a bridge between the local healthcare system and international humanitarian actors operating in the camp.

CMA provided specialized Greek medical staff (specialized doctors and nurses) who diagnosed, monitored, and treated patients with chronic conditions. Through an appointment-based system and electronic patient records, the team provided consistent consultations, follow-up care, and referrals to specialist services when needed. CMA also worked with local healthcare providers on Lesvos to facilitate access to further diagnosis and treatment when required.

In addition to chronic care services, CMA also provided psychiatric support for camp residents with ongoing mental health conditions. Between 2021 and 2023, CMA operated psychiatric services focused on long-term mental health care. The program supported patients through follow-up consultations and stabilization of treatment plans, helping ensure continuity of care in coordination with other medical actors in the camp. Emergency psychiatric cases were referred to the hospital, while CMA’s services focused on chronic mental health needs and long-term support.
