the humanitarian principles behind our work

Every day, humanitarian organizations make decisions that affect people's access to healthcare and other essential services. To make sure that these decisions are based on need alone, humanitarian action is guided by internationally recognized principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, and Independence.

At CMA, these principles underline the work we do: They influence how we provide healthcare, how we interact with patients and partners, and how we respond to changing humanitarian needs.

(1) Humanity

Humanity means putting people first. It’s the foundation of humanitarian action.

At CMA, this starts with recognizing that everyone deserves access to healthcare, regardless of their circumstances. Whether someone visits our dental clinic with severe pain or needs medication through our pharmacy program, we aim to treat every person with dignity, compassion and respect.

(2) Impartiality

Impartiality means that assistance is provided according to need, without discrimination based on nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, political opinion, or legal status.

We do not decide who receives care based on nationality, legal status, religion, ethnicity or background. We prioritize patients according to their medical needs, ensuring that those with the most urgent conditions receive care first. Everyone who comes through our doors is treated equally and respectfully.

(3) Neutrality

Neutrality means we do not take sides.

Our role is not political. We are there to provide healthcare to people who need it. By remaining focused on our humanitarian mission, we can build trust with patients from different backgrounds and create a safe space where everyone feels welcome to seek care.

(4) Independence

Independence means our decisions are guided by humanitarian needs.

The services we provide and the way we deliver them are based on what communities need—not on any other interests. We assess needs on the ground and adapt our programs so that our support reaches people facing the greatest barriers to healthcare.

By placing humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence at the center of our work, we aim to ensure that healthcare is delivered fairly, respectfully, and based on need.
